Every month in Mongolia is a different country. Here is the unglossed version, what you will actually feel, see, and be surprised by.
January to March: The Deep Cold
-20°C to -40°C. Empty roads. Clearest skies on earth. Ice Festival on Khövsgöl in early March. If you come now, you come for silence, stars, and the Tsagaan Sar lunar new year. The steppe is frozen gold and white.
April to May: The Shoulder
Wind is the season. Sheep are lambing. Temperatures swing from -5°C to +15°C. Fewer travellers. Good for photographers willing to trade warmth for empty light.
June: The Sweet Spot
Steppe turns green. Wildflowers. Long daylight (sun up 5am, down 10pm). Mild 18-25°C by day, 5-10°C by night. Our most-requested month.
July: Naadam and Crowds
July 11-13 is Naadam. Ulaanbaatar overflows. Countryside naadams (three games, wrestling, archery, horse racing) happen everywhere. Warm and dry. Book a year ahead.
August: The Golden Window
Peak green still holding. Rivers and lakes at their fullest. Festival shoulder. This is the month we recommend for first-time visitors who cannot book a year out.
September: The Brown Gold
Grasslands turn amber. Days 15-20°C, nights near freezing. The best photography month. Most festivals done. You have the country to yourself.
October: Eagle Festival
First weekend: Golden Eagle Festival in Bayan-Olgii (Altai, far west). Kazakh eagle hunters ride down from the mountains. This is not a performance. This is a working culture.
November to December: The Deepening
Snow arrives. Temperatures drop hard. Tourism season ends. The reindeer people move camps. Ice begins to form on Khövsgöl. A country returning to its winter self.
