The connectivity reality
Ulaanbaatar has 5G coverage city-wide, with average download speeds around 110 Mbps and surprisingly low latency to Asia and Europe. The city has 12 active coworking spaces. Big Sky Lodge has fibre internet (40 Mbps). Otugi Camp deliberately does not, because the no-Wi-Fi posture is its product.
Where to base
Bluemoon Coworking is the expat-friendly default, day passes 25,000 MNT (about 7 USD). Hub UB is more startup-focused. Tan Coworking near the Russian Embassy is quieter and has better espresso. All have private call booths.
Internet outside UB
4G coverage extends along all major paved roads and into provincial capitals. Drops to 3G or none in deep countryside. A local SIM (MobiCom or Unitel) gives 30GB for around 30,000 MNT (10 USD), which is enough for two weeks of normal remote work.
Visa for remote workers
Mongolia is visa-free for 30 days for most western passports. Extension to 60 days is routine. Beyond that, a business visa requires sponsorship; we can sponsor remote workers staying with our properties for 60+ day stays.
Time zones for international meetings
Ulaanbaatar is UTC+8. Comfortable hours for meetings with Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul. Workable for European mornings (UB afternoons). Difficult for Western US (early mornings UB time).
The lodge-and-laptop combo
Big Sky Lodge has eight private cabins, fibre Wi-Fi, and is 80 minutes from Ulaanbaatar. Stay a week, work mornings, ride or hike afternoons. Per-night rate from 285 USD with breakfast and dinner.
What to know
Power: 220V, European plugs. Co-living: limited, mostly Airbnb. Climate: factor it. Mongolian winters are real, summers are pleasant.
