Mongolia's violent crime rate is among the lowest in Asia. According to the Global Peace Index, Mongolia ranks ahead of France, the UK, and the USA. Street harassment of foreigners is almost nonexistent outside certain Ulaanbaatar nightlife districts. Female travellers consistently tell us they felt safer walking alone in Ulaanbaatar at night than in major European cities.
Twice a year we operate women-only departures of our Eastern Steppe and Khuvsgol Lake trips. Led by our senior female guide Tsetsegmaa Dorj, these departures attract women who prefer women-led trips, first-time travellers, and repeat guests. The atmosphere is extraordinary.
Dress modestly in Ulaanbaatar temples but anything goes in the countryside. Nomadic hosts are deeply welcoming to solo women. Public transport is fine but we recommend a driver for reliability. Bathroom privacy is limited in ger camps but all our fixed lodges have en-suite facilities.
Stock up in Ulaanbaatar (Nomin Supermarket has western brands). Our trip bags include extra supplies and a travel bidet attachment. Sanitary disposal at ger camps is managed with sealed bags that we carry back to the city.
Mongolian men will be friendly. A clear polite no is completely respected. We caution guests against accepting drinks from strangers in certain Ulaanbaatar bars (same as anywhere). Our guides are available by phone 24/7 if any guest ever feels unsafe.
