Mongolia Visa Guide 2027: Every Passport, Every Answer

Mongolia's visa rules are generous but occasionally confusing. We keep this guide updated for the 60 passports most of our guests hold, including visa-free rules, e-visa procedures, and border-crossing tips.

The visa-free list

Mongolia grants visa-free entry of 30 days to passport holders from: USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Cuba, Laos, Hong Kong SAR, Philippines, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Germany, Brazil, and 34 other countries. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or ask us for your specific passport.

The e-visa option

For most other passports, Mongolia offers an e-visa through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Processing takes 5 business days. Fee is 50-80 USD depending on nationality. Single entry, 30 days. We help guests navigate this when their passport requires it.

European Union passports

EU citizens can enter visa-free for 30 days. Longer stays require an extension from the Department of Citizenship and Migration in UB (which we handle if needed).

British passport holders

Visa-free 30 days. Post-Brexit rules did not change this.

Chinese passport holders

Visa required. Consular visa application in Beijing or any Chinese city with Mongolian consulate.

Indian passport holders

Visa required. E-visa available through the Mongolian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Arrival at Chinggis Khaan Airport

Queue for immigration is rarely long. Have your passport ready, no form to fill out for visa-free nationals, a stamp and you are through. No fingerprinting. Customs declarations only required for cash over 10,000 USD.

Border crossings

By road: the Zamiin-Uud / Erlian crossing to China is the most-used, open 24/7. The Altanbulag / Kyakhta crossing to Russia is slower but functional. Trans-Mongolian rail guests cross at Sukhbaatar (to Russia) or Zamiin-Uud (to China). All are straightforward for visa-free nationals.

Extensions

Stay longer than 30 days? Extend at the Department of Citizenship and Migration in Ulaanbaatar. Fee is 40,000 MNT (about 12 USD). Takes 2 days. Extensions of up to 60 additional days are routine.

If your passport is not visa-free

Apply for e-visa at eVisa.gov.mn at least 10 days before travel. Single entry, 30 days, 50-80 USD. For multiple entry or longer stays, apply for a consular visa at your nearest Mongolian embassy.
