Mongolia wins on scale and authenticity. 3.4 million people, twice the size of Texas, 2 people per square kilometre. You can drive three hours without seeing another car. Nomadic culture is real and lived, not performed. Landscape is dramatic and varied. Downside: long drives, limited infrastructure outside UB, longer minimum trip length.
Kazakhstan is 9x the size of Mongolia but 18x the population. Much more developed. Almaty is a beautiful mountain city. The steppe is vast but less empty than Mongolia. Border region with Mongolia is stunning (Altai). Downside: less nomadic culture (most Kazakhs are now urban), and the iconic landscapes are spread out.
Kyrgyzstan is small and navigable. Lake Issyk-Kul is beautiful. Horse trekking in the Tien Shan is world-class. Nomadic yurt stays are accessible. Prices are low. Downside: less scale than Mongolia, much less empty, tourism season is short (June-September).
