Oyungerel Enkhbat
Minus 25 to minus 40 in the countryside. Clear blue skies, diamond light, perfect air. Rara Avis operates Ulaanbaatar Noir (city-focused) and Winter Eagle (Altai). Khuvsgol ice forms thick. Not for first-timers; magnificent for repeat travellers.
Mongolian Lunar New Year, usually late January or mid-February. Families gather, rituals abound, every ger has ritual food laid out. Culturally immense but requires invitation (we handle). Also snow leopard tracking season in Altai.
First or second weekend of March. Ice sculptures, reindeer racing on ice, horse-drawn sleighs. One of the most photogenic events on earth. We hold annual access.
The hardest month. Steppe is thawing, roads are muddy, temperatures fluctuating. Most operators close for this month. We do too. Reopen May 1.
Grass begins to green. Lambs, calves, baby camels, baby yaks everywhere. Host families move out of winter camps. The first wildflowers. Great for landscape photography and shoulder pricing.
Green steppes, wildflowers, long days (sun sets 9:15pm), warm days 20-25C, cool nights. Our busiest month after July. Pre-Naadam energy in Ulaanbaatar.
July 11-13 is Mongolia's national festival. Wrestling, archery, horse racing across every town and city. Peak season for tourism. Ulaanbaatar is alive. Countryside naadams from early July through late August are smaller and more authentic.
Still warm (highs 20-27C), still green. Less crowded than July. Gobi Desert at its warmest, ideal for dune photography at dawn. The Gobi-trip sweet spot.
Golden larches, red willows, photographic paradise. The steppe turns amber. Cooler nights (5-15C), warm days. Light is exceptional. Our photographers' favourite month.
First weekend of October in Bayan-Olgii. 130 eagle hunters, 260 golden eagles, dust, fur, wind, extraordinary. Broader October sees snow arriving in mountains, empty trails, lovely golden light.
Snow on mountains, colder days (0 to -15C), shorter light. Ulaanbaatar still active. Countryside slows down. Few tourists. Low rates.
Christmas and New Year are marked in UB but not across Mongolia. Clear skies, bitter cold, very few visitors. The quiet month before the crystalline January-March deep winter window.
